RICHARD S. MENDELSOHN, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S.
Dr. Richard Mendelsohn enjoys working with patients of all ages on a multitude of foot and ankle conditions. Widely recognized as a specialist in the treatment of sports and dance injuries, he is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Society of Podiatric Dermatology and a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Frequently consulted by other physicians for his expertise in the area of sports- and dance-related injuries, he is a clinical advisor and columnist for the American Running and Fitness Association. He was named by the Consumers’ Research Council of America as one of “America’s Top Podiatrists.” Dr. Mendelsohn serves as a consulting podiatrist for numerous professional and amateur sports teams, and appeared on ABC, CBS and NBC news where he spoke about new advances in podiatry.
Dr. Mendelsohn received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta and earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Philadelphia’s Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1985. He completed his residency in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, (an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School).
Married with five children, Dr. Mendelsohn is a passionate hockey fan who enjoys watching and participating in a variety of other sports as well.
GARY SCHEIB, D.P.M.
Dr. Gary Scheib earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, where he was a Dean’s List student. Following his graduation, he served residencies in primary podiatric medicine, orthopedics and surgery through the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. During that time, he had the opportunity to work with patients of many ages, backgrounds and health challenges at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the Premier Surgical Center in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Prior to his podiatric studies, Dr. Scheib earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and later attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He spent more than 20 years in the retail footwear industry, including an eight-year tenure as department manager for Nordstrom, Inc., a company nationally recognized for its high standards of customer service and satisfaction. He also served for more than 10 years as district manager of a major shoe distribution company based in Canton, Massachusetts.
Dr. Scheib, who has always enjoyed helping people and solving problems, believes that successful doctor-patient relationships depend on both medical expertise and communication. Having helped thousands of people over two decades find comfortable, properly-fitting shoes, he gained a unique perspective on the difficulties and frustrations faced every day by those with foot and ankle ailments.
Dr. Scheib enjoys playing golf and fishing. He lives in Paris, Virginia, with his wife, Trisha, and son, Cameron. They share their home with a rather temperamental Jack Russell terrier.
DEENA L. CHARNEY, D.P.M.
Dr. Deena Charney has been associated with the Family Foot and Ankle Centers for more than 10 years. Her specialty areas include diabetic and women’s foot care and trauma/sports injuries. She enjoys working with patients of all ages, especially the pediatric and geriatric populations and primarily performs preventative foot care, geriatric care and treatment for women’s foot problems.
She has the distinction of having served on the bioethics committees for both Inova Fairfax and Inova Fair Oaks Hospitals, and has participated in medical bioethics seminars throughout the state.
Dr. Charney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Albright College (Reading, Pennsylvania) in 1989. She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Finch University (Chicago, Illinois) in 1993. She completed three years of residency training to include a one-year rotating podiatric residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and a two-year surgical/trauma residency at the Golden Glades Medical Center in North Miami Beach, Florida.
Born in Washington and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, Dr. Charney enjoys walking to stay fit and is a two-time participant in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. She and her husband, Larry, can often be found spending time with their two children, Samuel and Madeline.
Cameron Phipps D.P.M., A.A.C.F.A.S.
Dr. Cameron Phipps grew up in Loudoun County and is pleased to be practicing in his home state. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from Utah State University with focuses in Chemistry and Spanish. While attending University he had the opportunity to spend two years of service in Panama, where he became fluent in Spanish. Dr. Phipps went on to receive his Doctorate from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, IA where he worked with both religious and community organizations such as the Special Olympics and spent a year at multiple hospitals around the United States training under some of the most well known orthopedic and podiatric physicians. Most recently, Dr. Phipps completed a three-year surgical residency at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA where he received extensive surgical training and served as chief resident.
During his residency, Dr. Phipps became highly trained both clinically and surgically in forefoot and rearfoot reconstruction, limb salvage, sports medicine, pediatrics, and trauma. He also had the opportunity to train at the renowned Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics and the International Center for Limb Lengthening in Baltimore, MD, where he studied deformity correction under well-known orthopedic surgeon John Herzenburg, MD. Dr. Phipps is also experienced in all aspects of wound care and currently participates with the Inova Loudoun Hospital Wound Care Center.
Dr. Phipps enjoys interacting with patients of all ages and his specialties include flatfoot correction and sports related injuries. He is very involved with the community and actively volunteers with various organizations. He is an Eagle Scout and enjoys working with the youth. An avid exerciser, he relishes all sports, in particular Crossfit and football. He loves spending time outdoors, especially the beach, and with his wife and five children.
Dr. Phipps is currently a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Dr. Ashley Mayer, D.P.M.,A.A.C.F.A.S.
Dr. Ashley Mayer was born in Masan, South Korea, but was adopted at an early age into a wonderful family from Scranton, PA. She attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where she majored in Biology and minored in Psychology. Dr. Mayer went on to receive her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. She continued her surgical training in Philadelphia at Temple University Hospital – one of only four-year podiatric surgical residencies in the country. There she was trained extensively in elective forefoot and rearfoot surgery, reconstructive surgery, foot and ankle trauma, and diabetic limb salvage. During her final year, she also served as Chief Resident.
Skilled in the most recent and advanced foot and ankle surgery techniques, Dr. Mayer’s specialties include diabetic wound care/limb salvage and forefoot/rearfoot reconstruction. She believes that open communication is paramount for an effective doctor-patient relationship.
During her time off, she enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and biking. She is also an enthusiast of the arts, especially ballet and theatre. Most recently she has found a passion for power yoga, which she loves for its restorative effects.
Dr. Mayer is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association, and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Mayer is Board Qualified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
